Dr. Timothy Hsu

Dr. Timothy Hsu is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Georgia Tech School of Music and Center for Music Technology. Dr. Hsu received a double Bachelor in Music in Piano Performance and Recording Arts and a Master of Arts in Acoustics at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Later, he continued his studies with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (acoustics) and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering while studying acoustics at Georgia Tech. Since 2013, he has been a faculty member whose research focuses on acoustics, musical acoustics, instrument design, music education, and architectural acoustics. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Hsu also serves as a choral ensemble director, directing the Georgia Tech Chorale, and associate directing the Georgia Tech Chamber Choir. His choirs consist of non-music majors and the students’ music reading abilities differ dramatically. Even so, his choirs have performed works not only of Bach, and Mozart, but also of Webern and Schoenberg. Academically, he has co-developed the Fundamentals of Musicianship I-IV academic sequence, which includes aural skills, sight-singing, music theory, history, and technology. Lastly, Dr. Hsu is a music director at an Atlanta-area church where he directs a volunteer choir and volunteer hand bell choir. He is an active member of the Acoustical Society of America, Georgia Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, amongst other professional societies.
