In the Summer of 2016, the non-profit Open Music Initiative (OMI) was founded by Berklee Institute of Creative Entrepreneurship to simplify how music rights owners are identified and compensated. Its international membership of artists, managers, record labels, publishers, streaming companies, blockchain startups and universities united around the concept of interoperability—defining a technical means to allow quick, secure and accurate sharing of song information across the digital ecosystem to result in faster payments. This Spring the Initiative will release their first version of an API to enable this goal. IDEO’s Michael Hendrix, a co-founder of the OMI Initiative, will be hosting a conversation about what OMI is set up to do, and what has been learned so far through a process of speculative design.
