3D Audio for Artists and Musicians

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Are you an artist or musician interested in 3D sound? In this workshop, several methods of sound spatialization are described and demonstrated. Hear how the power of immersive audio can become a compositional and audio engineering tool to create new musical experiences. Examples include live electric violin spatialized through 24 loudspeakers, Moog synthesizer sounds flying around you, 3D convolution reverberation, and a spatial chip tune demo. This informal workshop encourages discussion during the two hours, with 30 minutes at the end for mini-breakouts and Q&A.

This session will take place in a site-specific hexaphonic audio environment designed and installed by engineers from Virginia Tech ICAT.

Spatial Sound

The spatial location of sound is as important as pitch and rhythm. Experiments with "Spatial Music" have informed composition since the early nineteen-hundreds. But today, 21st century technologies for audio recording, production, and playback have revived an interest in surround sound and the three-dimensional potential of electronic music.
