The instrument makers have created hybrid software/hardware instruments, apps and systems that enable wireless control of audio and video. Song, performance and custom instruments combine for a semi-staged version of core elements from the opera. Each of the scenes features a unique controller and system.
In The Sound of Dreaming, the singer performs. If she uses language, why does it come back fractured in her dreams? If she uses her voice, why does it splinter and run riot? Does she have “undo”? Is she performing now, when she hears it, or later, when you hear it?
Scene 1:
Wearing her Sound & Lights Bodysuit, triggering ambient sounds, Nona Hendryx sings two of her classic hits, remixed and re-envisioned by a DJ/VJ trio. With Pioneer decks, Csound for Live and an Edirol video mixer.

Scene 2:
Backstage, Nona’s ‘controller’ sings her to sleep. With Csound/Muse and three Leap Motions and real-time hypnotic video synthesis.
Scene 3:
Nona under control, a nightmare! Her ‘controller’ is a puppet master. With a custom P5 Glove system and surround Csound in MaxMSP. Nona responds using the Tsuchiya Arduino Glove.
Scene 4:
Sleep talking, a Brainwave duet between Nona and Jacob Richter.  A Csound brainwave system using the Muse EEG sensor and a Soundmachines BL1 Brainterface-controlled speech synthesizers make idle chatter featuring nightmare video synthesis and sampling.
Scene 5:
Nona awakes and takes control. Featuring custom Blake Adelman speak-and-paint software for the Orbit controller and original art by Nona Hendryx, plus, voice-aware and responsive iPad apps result in algorithmic accompaniments, stems and loops under wireless touch control
Scene 6:
The TransHuman Diva. Nona joins the audience in her Audio Tutu, accompanied by a Csound spatial orchestra performed by an ensemble of WiiMotes, and featuring video synthesis and video sampling using paintings and other visual material by Nona Hendryx.
Boulanger and Hendryx will host a technology demo and a question-and-answer session after the performance.
